According to the Oxford English Dictionary<\/em> (OED<\/a>), E<\/em> appears in approximately 11% of all common English words. The letter E<\/em> is also the most commonly struck letter on your keyboard, second only to the space bar. E<\/em> appears in the most common English noun <\/a>time<\/a><\/em>, the most common verb be<\/em>, in the pronouns he<\/em>, she<\/em>, me<\/em>, and we<\/em>, as well as tens of thousands of words ending in -ed<\/em> and -es<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second most common letter is T<\/em>, with A<\/em>, I<\/em>, N<\/em>, O<\/em>, and S<\/em> tying for third. The least-used letter in the alphabet is Q<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an exercise called constrained writing<\/a>, composing prose without the letter E<\/em> is a scribe’s ultimate challenge. Ernest Vincent Wright’s 1939 novel, Gadsby<\/a><\/em>, contains 50,000 words, none of which include the letter E<\/em>. The 1969 novel, La Disparition<\/a><\/em> (The Disappearance<\/em>), by Georges Perec, is another 300-page story without the letter E<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you know E<\/em> is also a number? With the possible exception of\u00a0\u03c0,\u00a0\u00a0e<\/em> is the most important constant in mathematics since it appears in myriad mathematical contexts involving limits<\/a> and derivatives<\/a>. Most are familiar with this mathematical constant when used in banking for compounded interest and is numerically valued at 2.71828. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
