matching?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Think again!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">UNO is a great game for getting your students speaking!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I use it to get my students to practice all of the following language:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">This is a\u2026<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">That is a \u2026<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">These are \u2026<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Those are\u2026<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">What is this?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">What is that?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">What are these?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">What are those?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Not<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Colors<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">numbers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here is an example of how I use it in a class where students are learning\u00a0to use the basic sentence structure, \u201cThis is a \u2026\u201d:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Deal out seven cards to each student and play the game as usual, only students must say what they are laying down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For example, if a student is going to lay down a yellow 2, she must say, \u201cThis is a Yellow 2.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The play then goes to the next student.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s say he lays down a Green 2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He must say, \u201cThis is a Green 2.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Play the game in this fashion until one of the students lays down all of the cards in her hand and wins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a class=\"p1\">The special cards in the deck are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">This is a Wild Draw 4<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">This is a Wild card<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">This is a Green Draw 2<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">This is a Red Skip<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">This is a Blue Reverse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">When the students start contrasting \u2018this\u2019 and \u2018that\u2019, bring that to the game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now, students must say what the previous student laid down before saying what they are about to lay down:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThat is a Yellow 2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a Blue Skip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As the students progress further, the expectations for play expand as well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For example, when the students are learning plurals, and the contrasting words \u2018these\u2019 and \u2018those\u2019, support this by incorporating them into the game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When a student has two or more of the same card in his hand, he can now lay them all down at once, saying, \u201cThese are Red 7\u2019s\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The next student must then say, \u201cThose are Red 7\u2019s before saying what he is about to lay down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In this game now, students are contrasting \u2018this\u2019, \u2018that\u2019, \u2018these\u2019, and \u2018those\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Have your students learned \u2018not\u2019?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Throw it in!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now when a student lays down a card, she must first say what it is not, and then what it is:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis is <i>not<\/i> a Green 9.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a Blue 4.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And for added fun, the students can be allowed to say anything that their card is not:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis is not a gorilla!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a Blue 4.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And of course, you play the game in which students ask questions too!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In this case, the student would lay her card down and ask the next student, \u201cWhat is this?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The next student must answer, \u201cThat is a Green 8,\u201d before laying down her own card and asking the next student the appropriate question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As you can see, there are a lot of options for using UNO to support the language you are teaching.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0
