{"id":1799,"date":"2019-08-30T01:21:06","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T01:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kinneybrothers.com\/blog\/?p=1799"},"modified":"2024-04-20T23:25:57","modified_gmt":"2024-04-20T23:25:57","slug":"fun-facts-20-rhinorrhea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kinneybrothers.com\/blog\/blog\/2019\/08\/30\/fun-facts-20-rhinorrhea\/","title":{"rendered":"Fun Facts About English #20 &#8211; Rhinorrhea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kinneybrothers.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"702\" width=\"702\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kinneybrothers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/020.jpg?resize=702%2C702&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fun Facts About English 20 Kinney Brothers Publishing\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To most laymen, medical terminology can be confusing when you&#8217;re not up to date on your Latin and Greek roots.  <em>Rhinorrhea<\/em> is from the Greek words <em>rhino<\/em>&#8211; meaning &#8220;of the nose,&#8221; and &#8211;<em>rhoia<\/em> meaning &#8220;a flowing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other common medical terms with <em>rino-<\/em> include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Rinoplasty<\/strong> &#8211; nose surgery colloqually known as a &#8216;nose job.&#8217;<\/li><li><strong>Rinolalia<\/strong> &#8211; or <strong>rinophonia<\/strong>, is a nasal quality of the voice, usually associated with disease or defect of the nasal passages.<\/li><li><strong>Rinopharyngitis<\/strong> &#8211; inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose and pharynx.<\/li><li><strong>Gustatory Rhinitis<\/strong> &#8211; inflammation or runny nose that occurs because of spicy food.<\/li><li><strong>Rhinologist<\/strong> &#8211; a physician who specializes in&nbsp;rhinology, or the nose.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though you may not recognize these terms for common ailments, the next time you&#8217;re watching your favorite hospital drama, you can feel smug for being in the doctors&#8217; circle of understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Obdormition<\/strong> &#8211; This is when part of your body, like your arm, has &#8220;fallen asleep.&#8221;  The prickly, tingling sensation is referred to as <em>paresthesia<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong>Fasciculation<\/strong> &#8211; When muscle fibers spontaneously contract, they are commonly known as a &#8220;muscle twitch.&#8221;  The Latin term means &#8220;little bundle.&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>Transient Diaphragmatic Spasm<\/strong> &#8211; This is known as &#8220;getting the wind knocked out of you.&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>Crepitus<\/strong> &#8211; This Latin term means &#8220;rattle&#8221; or &#8220;crack&#8221; and refers to the popping, creaking, and cracking of joints when you get out of bed in the morning.  The word <em>decrepit<\/em> is of the same root.<\/li><li><strong>Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia<\/strong> &#8211; Whip this term out the next time you get a headache when eating ice cream! While some of the expressions below are inside jokes, most are simply trying to avoid unrecognizable titles or an explanation that includes &#8220;alphabet soup&#8221; &#8211; a reference to all the acronyms used in medical terminology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Butts and Guts<\/strong> &#8211; This refers to a gastroenterologist, a doctor who specializes in ailments or afflictions that affect the stomach, intestines, colon, rectum, gallbladder, and esophagus.<\/li><li><strong>Gas Passer<\/strong> &#8211; This is a humorous term for an anaesthesiologist because they often put their patients under with gas before an important or dangerous procedure.<\/li><li><strong>Flu in the Knees<\/strong> &#8211; In the case of arthritis, the pain a patient may be feeling when doing certain activities may be more clearly understood where the condition can have flareups similar to a bad case of the flu.<\/li><li><strong>Bloodsucker<\/strong> &#8211; This is medical slang for a phlebotomist, a health care professional that works with collecting a patient&#8217;s blood and properly storing it.<\/li><li><strong>Code Brown<\/strong> &#8211; This is a good example of insider humor, as it refers to a patient who has had a poop incident and that it is everywhere.<\/li><li><strong>Baby Catcher<\/strong> &#8211; Also known as an obstetrician, a baby catcher is a humorous title for a doctor who&#8217;s specialization is the practice of caring for pregnant women.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you enjoyed this post, check out the common <a href=\"https:\/\/kinneybrothers.com\/blog\/blog\/2021\/02\/08\/fun-facts-95-eponym\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">words eponymously named after colorful personalities<\/a>!
