Besides the above, other words include <em>ninth, pint, wolf, opus, dangerous, marathon, <\/em>and<em> discombobulate<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who find themselves in a language kerfuffle when pining to rhyme, assonance can sometimes carry the verse.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><em>Bronze, plus some&nbsp;<strong>silver<\/strong>&nbsp;and gold,<br>Won&#8217;t be of help if you <strong>shiver<\/strong> when cold.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Equestrians may be familiar with the word <em>curple<\/em>, a corrupted form of the Scottish word <em>crupper<\/em> which means the hindquarters or rump of a horse.  Though this word in fact rhymes with <em>purple<\/em>, it is largely out of use.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another slang word, <em>nurple<\/em> &#8211; as in <em>a<\/em> <em>purple nurple<\/em>, is a rhyming derivation of the words nipple and purple and, in practice, a very painful prank. Many of the nursery rhymes we know today go as far back as the Middle Ages and continue to get passed down generation after generation. Though there are many sites detailing the darker side of nursery rhymes, here are a few lighter facts you may not have heard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Shakespeare mentions Jack and Jill in <em>Love\u2019s Labour\u2019s Lost<\/em> and in <em>A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>.<\/li><li>In the 17th century, a <em>Humpty Dumpty<\/em> was a drink of brandy boiled with ale. <\/li><li>The first collection of children&#8217;s songs and rhymes in English was <em>Tommy Thumb\u2019s Pretty Song Book<\/em>, published in 1774. It included <em>Hickory Dickory Dock<\/em>, <em>London Bridge is Falling Down<\/em>, and <em>Bah, Bah, a black Sheep<\/em>.<\/li><li><em>Mary Had A Little Lamb<\/em> was Thomas Edison\u2019s first recording on his phonograph in 1878.<\/li><li>In 1951, <em>Baa, Baa, Black Sheep<\/em> was the first song digitally saved and played on a computer.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in more fun facts about common words?
